The Los Angeles Maritime Museum, located on the main channel in the Port of Los Angeles, offers visitors a chance to explore the history of the port. Housed in the historic ferry building, the Museum is open 6-days a week, year-round, offering self-guided tours for visitors and free field trips for students in grades K-12.
Current exhibits topics include fishing/canning, hardhat diving, the Terminal Islanders (a Japanese American fishing community), the US Navy, sailors' art, and an extensive array of ship models, including an 11-foot model of the aircraft carrier USS NIMITZ.
A hands-on area for children invites family learning, with a sweeping view of the busy harbor. An amateur "ham" radio station operates on the second floor. The Museum shop is stocked with toys, books, jewelry, and gift items.
