Getting around

New York is easy to navigate, but if you can't walk to your destination there are plenty of options

Subway

The quickest way to travel around, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from as low as $2.75 per ride, with stops usually every 8-10 blocks.

Taxis

If the top taxi number is illuminated it's available, minimum metered fare is $2.50, which increases 50 cents every fifth of a mile or every minute.

Hop on, Hop off Buses

These buses connect major attractions all over the city and provide many photo opportunities, it's also a good way to catch a break or eat your sandwich while still sightseeing.

Things to do in April

Check out the following list of ideas for fun things to do in New York in April:

1. Macy's Flower Show

Celebrate the arrival of spring with the city's best flower show, free to the public. Beginning in late March, Macy's Herald Square puts on a spectacular show of blooms featuring over 30,000 varieties of flowers and flowering trees. You are also likely to be treated to extras like cooking demonstrations, centerpiece design, drawings for prizes, seminars, and other special events. For those who are interested in learning more about the featured plants, guided tours are available every half-hour between 11am and 4pm.

2. Easter Parade

Fifth Avenue's iconic Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival is a one-of-a-kind event. The parade begins at 49th street and marches up Fifth Avenue to 57th Street. The best viewing spot is at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, and if you want to actually be a part of the parade, all that's required is your own unique Easter bonnet. Either way, you'll want to join the crowds for a delicious Easter brunch at one of the area restaurants.

3. Adult Easter Egg Hunts

Get a team together and join NYC's Amazing Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt. Use the city as your backyard and solve the clues to fill your basket. The winning team is awarded an NYC gift basket. There is also a family-friendly option for kids.

4. Cherry Festival Blossoms

This festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is a favourite April event. Get your tickets in advance for this fabulous event featuring cultural performances, family-friendly activities, lots of vendors, and more.

5. Earth Day

The city hosts many Earth Day events during the month of April. One of the best can be found at Union Square with dozens of exhibitors, kid's activities and live performances.

Rainy Day Options in New York

Broadway Shows

Taking a Broadway show will chase away any rainy day blues during your visit to New York City. It might not be possible to get last minute tickets to every show, but you can find something a couple of hours before the show starts by visiting the box office of the theatre.
