When the United States Lighthouse Service (USLHS) “Super” Depot on the North Shore of Staten Island closed for the very last time, a group of enthusiasts were determined that its heritage should not be lost – and created the National Lighthouse Museum. From 1864 to 1939, it was the national headquarters of USLHS. Here vital equipment, like lenses and foghorns, was tested before being sent out to lighthouse keepers all around the coast of America so they could keep mariners safe. The 1912 foundry is now home to the Museum with charming and educational displays celebrating a bygone era. The self-guided tour usually takes between half and one hour – but allow plenty of time to admire the spectacular views out over the water.
